One of the most topographically and climatically diverse regions of the continent, the natural beauty and range of landscapes is unsurpassed in the lower 48. California’s idyllic coastline stretches over 1100 miles from Mexico to Oregon. Moving eastward, after passing the central valley, the mighty Sierra Nevada mountains run the entire length of the state. Mt Whitney, the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States stands at a height of 14,505ft (4,421m). After the Sierra Nevada rain shadow, we reach perhaps the most otherworldly and unique desert landscape on planet earth, Death Valley. The lowest point on the continent, the salt flats of Badwater Basin are 282ft (86m) below sea level. It is also one of the hottest and driest places in the world. Stovepipe Wells reached a verified temperature of 129.9F (54.4C), the hottest temperature ever recorded on planet earth.

California is also in the unique geographic location of having the oldest, largest and tallest trees in world. The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in the White Mountains has been proven as having the oldest living specimen on earth, a pine tree that began growing before the Roman Republic. The western flanks of the Sierra Nevada range are home to groves of Giant Sequoias, the largest trees by volume in world. The record holder, General Sherman, stands at a height of 275ft (83m) and is 36ft (11m) in diameter at its base. The tallest trees in world are the Coastal Redwoods of Northern California, the record holder is Hyperion, a tree with a height of 380ft (115m).
